Turkiye stun the hosts in a five-goal classic
Arda Güler ran the show as Turkiye came from behind to beat the United States in the group-stage shock so far.
Five goals, two comebacks and a final twist: this was the group stage at its most fun. The United States twice led and twice got pegged back, before Turkiye found a late winner to take all three points and silence a partisan home crowd.
Arda Güler was the best player on the pitch by a distance — gliding between the lines, picking the pass nobody else saw, and generally looking like a man who’d decided this was his tournament. Kenan Yıldız and Kerem Aktürkoğlu gave the USA defence no rest.
For the hosts, there were positives — Pulisic and Balogun both scored — but the defensive lapses will worry Pochettino. They recovered to top the group; on this evidence, the knockouts will be a test.
