Two underdogs, one ticket: South Africa meet a buzzing Canada
Neither side was supposed to be here with this much momentum. Something has to give in Los Angeles.
This is the kind of tie the expanded format was built for: two teams ranked outside the elite, both playing without fear, both one win from the last 16. South Africa edged through on the back of Hugo Broos’ organised, counter-punching side; Canada arrive as one of the stories of the group stage after that 6-0 demolition of Qatar.
Canada have the bigger names — Alphonso Davies flying down the left, Jonathan David leading the line — and the model leans their way. But South Africa’s Lyle Foster has looked sharp, and a low-block-and-spring gameplan has frustrated better teams than Canada this summer.
Watch the Davies-versus-Modiba flank. If Canada win it, they win the match. If South Africa keep it quiet, this goes the distance.
